We are proud and excited to announce that we are teaming up with Headlong to co-commissioning Olivier-nominated BESEA playwright AJ Yi. Yi will be creating a new play based on 'The Ballad of Mulan.'

As a both a playwright and a drag artist, AJ's work presents a nuanced B/ESEA perspective, and moves away from simplistic racial stereotypes which consider feminism, queerness, and complexity to be features unique to Western cultures. At the same time, their work explores the broader themes of patriotism, family loyalty, and warfare; and the universality of the struggle to navigate these.

This co-commission comes in a landmark period for both Headlong and New Earth, with Headlong celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and New Earth marking our 30th anniversary in 2025.
